The Benefits of Unplugging: What a Social Media Break Can Do for You

I have never really taken a Social Media Break, well this is my first time. Well, I think,  I was addicted to my phone, always had it, and felt uneasy not having it, you would always find me going from one app to the other, using it for work too for emails, and taking notes during meetings.  At home, I used it to take notes on my shopping list, watch Netflix, and read books on iBooks. So everything was on my phone, I was always glued to it, Glued to this little device.

So what happened?

Well life happened, I used my phone for other stuff too, like stalking (maybe I was an FBI Agent in my past life). So when I meet a new person I check their online presence, read each and everything about them, they say information is power and I love being powerful, I love being one step forward.

That's the thing with the internet, you can find everything about a person, from the schools/colleges they went to, what Degree they pursued, their jobs, their last vacation to the dissertation they wrote during their Masters Degree. Let me tell you one thing you probably did not know about me I do my assignments very well, and I take my tasks seriously. All I need is a name and I will do the rest.

But that is not the reason why I thought I should take a break.  I also use social media to verify what somebody tells me, if I feel what is said is a lie ( speaking about Trust Issues), I go through the socials to check the validity of what is said. ( I won't say how I do it but it always works) So a little advice if you want to keep your life private, don't post what you're willing not to share on socials.

...if you want to keep your life private, don't post what you're willing not to share on socials.

Yes, so life happened and well I thought that could be unhealthy for me. Why don't I just take a break? So one bright morning I deleted the socials:  Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Telegram, Clubhouse, MK. The only social apps I left were WhatsApp, YouTube, and LinkedIn as I used them for work and they bring value, if not I would delete them too. Will be doing this for a month or more and see.

The Positives

What would you add to your schedule if you had so much time to spare? This is what I did.

I just found out that I have so much time to spare since am not glued to my phone all the time, so I asked myself what should I do with that spare time. Even started tracking my Screen Time, and I saw huge improvements.

So this is what I have been up to:

  • I spend more time reading ( I read more than before); books, articles, name it all
  • I watch a lot of documentaries and knowledge-based videos

But I still have spare time, 24 Hours could really be a lot. So am thinking of starting to watch the news as a proper Millenial Adult,  and do evening walks.

  • And well am back to writing ( peep when I last wrote here, this was 3 months ago.)
  • I slept early, whhheew.
  • Downloaded Duolingo and have started learning French,  and it's so addictive (or because I have more time). And this is me manifesting; see you soon Paris (wink)
  • More time communicating & being social like a normal person.
  • Got introduced to this blog Biko Zulu that I have been reading endlessly. He is a Kenyan blogger, who posts every Tuesday. and I really love his writing style. I started reading the articles from ages ago. I actually got an idea from this that I can also have a specific day during the week that I will always write and post, maybe every Sunday, I don't know yet. Still exploring the possibility.

Updates ...Did I make it?

  • Its day 3 now, and Do I feel like am missing anything?  Well NO. I don't know when I will be back. I feel more at peace, it was a bit weird on day one, felt like I was cut off from a severe addiction but it gets better with time.

My Take on this

Social media has this way of making you feel that you are over the edge. Am glad I did this and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a break.

They say everything happens for a reason, I don't know why I did not look at this from this angle.

More Updates

It's Day n, no regrets and I feel so great.
